Soldotna resident Kathleen “Kathy” A. Walker, 64, died unexpectedly Saturday, Apr. 27, 2013 at her home.
A memorial mass was held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Soldotna. Father Roger Bergkamp, O.M.I., officiated. A celebration of her life was held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at O’Neill Hall, next to the Catholic Church.
Kathy was born Nov. 4, 1948 in Chicago, Ill. She graduated from Burge School of Nursing. She was a 20 year Navy Wife and a 9 year Navy Mom. She lived in Liberal, Mo. from 1986-1989 and Joplin, Mo. from 1989-2005.
Kathy moved to Alaska in 2006 and worked at Central Peninsula Hospital, Central Peninsula Family Practice and most recently at Heritage Place on Sitka Rose, the Alzheimer’s Unit.
She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Soldotna.
Kathy enjoyed going to garage sales and was interested in doTerra essential oils. She also recently began learning to quilt and play the piano.
Her family writes, “Kathy never met a stranger in her life; she could not go anywhere in public without running into at least one person she knew. She was happy to get to know anyone, and quick to care for those in need, as she did so willingly in her work and in her personal life. Kathy absolutely loved working in the Alzheimer’s unit at Heritage Place, which highlights her tendency to help others selflessly.
Sharing came naturally to Kathy. She consistently offered what she had to those who didn’t. Though very open, Kathy was also fiercely protective of her family and friends.
She was supportive and stoic, tender and tenacious, as the situation required. She was a perfect Navy wife and mother.
Above all, Kathy was humble. She created and shaped three children of whom she was immensely proud, nurtured and maintained one strong marriage and family, perfectly complemented one great husband, and brought out the best in those she touched. She would, however, claim no responsibility for these works. She will be missed terribly, but her legacy will endure.”
Kathy is survived by her husband, Mike Walker of Soldotna; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Tabitha Walker of Soldotna, Ted and Dondi Walker of Minneapolis, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Danny Rangel of Joplin, Mo.; grandchildren, Graci Kathleen Walker of Joplin, Kelsey Walker of Seminole, Fla., and Austin Jackson of Soldotna.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
