SHELDON- Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James Cemetery for Calvin “Don” Gardner, 88, Sheldon, who died Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Lockwood. Full military honors will be conducted. Minister C.K. Warden will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Konantz Warden Funeral Home, Lamar.

Survivors include two sons, Nick Gardner, Redding, Calif., and Mike Gardner, Soldotna, Alaska; a daughter, Cathy Boyd, Fort Bragg, Calif; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rex and Gene Gardner, and a sister, Helen Arft.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, wife Doris; his youngest son, Christopher, and three brothers, Aaron, John and Dale.
Mr. Gardner was born Oct. 1, 1924, to Floyd and Zula (Beydler) Gardner. He was reared during the depression on the family’s farm. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served as a combat aircrew man aboard a Martin PBM Bomber, stationed in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. After serving his country he settled in Challenge, Calif., where he married Barbara Withers. Four children were born to this union.
He began his working career as a timber faller and by 1960 he owned and operated a logging company in Redding, Calif. He retired in 1995, choosing to spend his summers fishing Alaska’s Kenai River, where he caught trophy Rainbow Trout. He spent winters in Sheldon, only a short distance from where he grew up.
Mr. Gardner was a Mason, a Shriner and sponsor of local youth groups within the community.
