Bobby Bourne, Jr. of Lockwood waived the formal reading of charges against him at his arraignment, Monday afternoon (August 26), in Barton County Circuit Court. He is charged with kidnapping, first degree murder, forcible rape, and statutory rape in the death of 12-year-old Adriaunna Horton of Golden City on August 19. An autopsy revealed the girl was strangled.
The hearing was delayed briefly to allow Bourne to complete an application for a public defender. An application had not been filed since Bourne’s arrest. Public defenders Joe Zuzul and Frank Yankoviz were present at the hearing.
Associate Circuit Judge Charles Curless read Bourne his rights and assigned the two public defenders as his counsel. The public defenders filed a number of motions, which the judge will rule on at Bourne’s next court appearance, September 9 at 1 p.m.
Security was tight on the second floor of the Barton County Courthouse. All who entered the courtroom were subjected to an electronic search. Stationed around the immediate area and inside the courtroom were seven members of the Barton County Sheriff’s Department, including Sheriff Mitchell Shaw, and at least six members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
