LAMAR-Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Daniel Funeral Home for Melba May Ambler, 89, Lamar, who died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. Burial will be in Tolson Cemetery, east of Sheldon.

Survivors include her children, Deborah Ann Ambler, Dennis Ambler and wife Bea and Denise Mankey and husband Daniel, all of Lamar; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Morris, Beth Besendorfer, April Vaughan, Rex Ambler, Max Ambler, Amanda Foster and A.J. Mankey, and nine great-grandchildren, Allison and Ashlynn Morris, Dashelle Pennell, Chloe Vaughan and Klayton, Isaac, Jacob, Gabriel and Ella Foster.


She was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Hess, and a son, David Ambler on January 9, 2010.


Mrs. Ambler was born Jan. 28, 1924, at Iantha, to John and Vista (Washburn) Hess. In addition to farming alongside her husband Tom, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a natural and loving caregiver for her family and many neighborhood children as well. She tended large gardens throughout the years, preserving the fruits and vegetables and taking pleasure in watching her flowers flourish.


She married Tom Ambler on Dec. 2, 1940, at Bentonville, Ark. They celebrated 57 years together before his passing on Jan. 10, 2008.
