JASPER-Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage for William “Carl” Bastin, Jr., 81, Jasper, who died at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Burial will follow in Hackney Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, at the mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hackney Cemetery or the Farm Bureau Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Beth Bastin; a daughter, Robyn McDowell and husband Bill, Jasper; a son, Robert Bastin and wife Kathy, Golden City and six grandchildren, Dr. Carrie McDowell (Hartigan), Matthew McDowell, Michael McDowell, Kayla Bastin (Ayers), Sarah Bastin and Jenny Bastin.
Mr. Bastin was born Aug. 9, 1932, to Gertrude and Carl Bastin Sr. He was a longtime farmer and rancher and sold Dekalb Seed for over 40 years. He was a leader in the agricultural community and an active member of various farm organizations. He was elected to serve on the Jasper County Farm Bureau Board from 1990-2014l, serving as president from 2003 to 2004. He also had the honor of serving at the state level as a Missouri Farm Bureau Board of Director for eights years, from 2003 to 2011. He enjoyed meeting new people, listening to their views on agriculture and sharing his. He enjoyed attending a host of activities with his grandchildren including concerts, speech contests, 4H activities and livestock shows. He was an inspiration to his family and will be deeply missed.
He married Mary Beth Seeley on Nov. 28, 1953.
