SHELDON- A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at Konantz Warden Funeral Home in Lamar for Virginia Joan (VanDorn) Turner, 86, Sheldon, who died Wednesday, March 15, 2023. A graveside funeral service will follow at Nashville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Gentiva Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband James; daughters Vicky Turner, Clinton and Deborah Kirkland, Ozark, Ala.; a sister, Marie Crank, Hutchinson, Kan.; a brother, Carl VanDorn and wife Margaret, Mulvane, Kan. and many nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry Lee, Richard, William and Edwin VanDorn.

Mrs. Turner was born Sept. 5, 1936, in Lamar, to Harry and Hazel (Corben) VanDorn. She was one of seven children. She graduated from Mindenmines High School in 1954 and went to work as a cashier for Woolworth in Pittsburg, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo. She married James Turner on Nov. 20, 1965, at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Liberal. They moved to Buckner, east of Kansas City, and lived there for 30 years before moving to Liberty for a couple of years and then to Sheldon in 1997.

Mrs. Turner was a talented musician who sang and played the piano. She did several funerals with Marion Sprouls. She was also very artistic and began formal art training in 1980. She took second place for one of her paintings at a contest in Missouri Town in the early 80s. She was talented enough that she was able to sell her paintings. She loved her family, had a great sense of humor and was known for her loving spirit.
