The Lamar Class of 1964 gathered for their 60th reunion on September 7. Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger The Lamar Tigers homecoming game against Mt. Vernon was set for Friday evening, Sept. 27, 7 p.m., at Thomas M. O’Sullivan Stadium. A parade formed at the school at 2:45 p.m. and traveled south down Gulf Street, circling the square and ending up at the Barton County Courthouse bandstand. The parade consisted of the flag corp, band members, players, cheerleaders, homecoming candidates and floats from the various classes, to which the freshman club won. Athletic Director Scott Quinly welcomed those attending in the absence of Coach Beshore, who was absent due to the birth of a son that morning. Quinly emphasized, “These boys have worked their tails off to make this community proud.” Also speaking, much to his chagrin and being goaded by the football players, was Coach Bailey who commented on last week’s loss and stated, “Get an oar and start rowing, because there are better days ahead for this bunch”. Some of the football players spoke, thanking the fans for all of their support and encouragement and for always cheering them on. Following this, games were played by the coronation candidates including Junk in the Trunk, played by the boys with Darin Caruthers wining, followed with the girls seeing who could eat a roll up the fastest without using their hands. Eleese Ortega was the winner of this game and lastly was the egg toss, with Caruthers and Ortega winning that. Candidates included Sophie Bronson and Eli Hull, Eleese Ortega and Darin Caruthers and Roxy Sprouls and Carson Sturgell. The cheerleaders, band and pep squad also performing, pumping up the crowd.
Lamar Tigers hold homecoming parade, pep rally
The home of Jeff and Aimee Clements at 202 East 1st Street has been chosen as the Yard of the Month by the Barton County Master Gardeners. The yard has a variety of ornamental and shade trees with a colorful array of raised beds containing dahlias, Lantana, petunias, salvia, blanket flower and zinnias. There are large stone fountains that have been designed and made by Jeff. Refurbished antique benches, lamp posts and swings decorate the front yard while several pieces of refurbished park-like play equipment are available for the grandchildren in the back yard. Over 5000 Coffeyville brick have been used to create a meandering path around the house. The yard provides a feast for the eye all around the house.

Wyatt Earp Fallfest offers something for everyone
Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Picnic in the Park had a large gathering at the noon hour on Thursday, Sept. 26, with many enjoying a time to visit with others while waiting for their meals. Picnic in the Park is held the fourth Thursday of the month, with the last one for 2024 scheduled to be held Thursday, Oct. 24.

Metzger’s Mutterings
Casen Lemmons, son of RD and Candice Lemmons, is the sixth grade Lamar Middle School Student of the Week. Casen likes to build and play with friends. He plays baseball. Casen has one male cat and one kitty. His favorite subjects are Science, Social Studies, Reading and Math.

Photos courtesy of James Epple and Tharran Gaines Although the morning didn’t start off with the best weather for a fly-in, the day finally decided to clear up as the Lamar Airport observed its 63rd anniversary with a fly-in on Saturday, Sept. 21. The day started at 7:30 a.m. with a breakfast and festivities and events occurred throughout the day. Unfortunately some planes were not able to get around the weather, causing more foot traffic than planes. That didn’t stop everyone from enjoying the display and the wait for the Blackhawk helicopter to land was well worth it. The medflight from Cox Hospital was also on hand.
