The Barton County Library kicked off their summer reading program at the Mary K. Finley Library in Lamar on Thursday morning, May 29, with children's musician Dino O'Dell. Shown in the picture are kids who followed him as he taught them movements to go with his songs, while teaching them about the seven continents, five oceans and what's special about each part of our world. There were almost 100 in attendance. The program at the library was O’Dell’s second of the morning, after offering a presentation to students in first through fifth grades at Lamar’s summer school. As usual, this project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

Photo by Payton Morrow The Lamar Tigers had a terrific season including winning the district championship. Key to the Tigers success was the play of a strong senior class. At a recent home game second baseman Cooper Haun goes back on pop-up while fellow senior Eli Hull sprints in from right field. The Tigers dropped a hard-fought sectional battle with Clever Wednesday at Monett to complete their season.

Photo by Payton Morrow The Liberal Lady Bulldogs finished fifth in Class 1 in the Track and Field State Championships last weekend in Jefferson City. Fifty-five schools were represented. Here, Liberal High School sophomore Ally Barton heads for the finish line. She finished third in the 400 meter dash and second in the open 800 meters and the 1600 meters and was a member of the 4x800 relay team that finished sixth.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Lamar Police Officer Dakota Heller was sworn in by City Clerk Felicia Costley prior to the May 27 city council meeting. His badge was pinned on him by his mother, Amy Heller. Officer Heller began his duties with Lamar following graduation from the MSSU Police Academy on May 9. He had previously worked at the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department as a corrections officer.
