LIBERAL- A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Konantz Warden Funeral Home in Lamar for Darrell W. Spurling, 71, Liberal, who died Sunday, June 16, 2024. Dinner will follow graveside interment at the Liberal Park Building.

The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made for final expenses, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Kim, who died three days after he did. He is survived by his children, Derrick Spurling and Kimberly Wass, Mindenmines and Daniel Spurling, Liberal; grandchildren, Jaxyn, Kasen, Lakyn and Claira Spurling; siblings, Mike Spurling and wife Jeannie and Cora Ganger, all of Liberal and his stepmother, Velma Spurling, Liberal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bobby McMechan, Randy McMechan and Carolyn Thompson; a brother-in-law, Darel Thompson; a nephew, Eddie Thompson and a niece, Lavona Chapman.

Mr. Spurling was born in Fort Scott, Kan. to Wilbur and Ethel (Bogart) Spurling. He grew up in the Liberal area. He married Kim Trout on Sept. 21, 1979 and the couple would have celebrated 45 years of marriage this year. They lived and reared their family in Girard, Kan. until 1996, when they moved to Liberal. He worked several places over the years, including making deliveries for Pico Ice Cream, working for Hagman Outlet Store and for the City of Liberal. He worked for many years for Superior Industries in Pittsburg, Kan., where he was fifth in the company for his length of service to them.

He was a talented word worker and enjoyed watching every sport from golf and tennis to baseball and football. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering with his cars and mowers, even when they didn’t have anything wrong with them.

Survivors include her children, Derrick Spurling and Kimberly Wass, Mindenmines and Daniel Spurling, Liberal; grandchildren, Jaxyn, Kasen, Lakyn and Claira Spurling and siblings, Sue Ghumm and husband Ralph, Jasper, Tina Cheney and husband Frank, Carl Junction, Becky Wheeler and husband Willie, Radley, Kan. and Dennis Trout and wife Brenda, Mindenmines.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Steven Trout; nephews, Phillip Trout and Jody Ghumm and a niece, Ashley Wheeler.

Mrs. Spurling was born in Girard, Kan. to George and Wilma (Russell) Trout. She grew up in Girard, Kan., graduating from Girard High School in 1977. She married Darrell Spurling on Sept. 21, 1979 and the couple would have celebrated 45 years of marriage this year. They lived and reared their family in Girard, Kan. until 1996, when they moved to Liberal. She worked at several places over the years including National Mills in Pittsburg, Kan., the hospital in Girard, Kan. and at Casey’s in Liberal.

She enjoyed reading and cooking and was well known for her taco salads and homemade ice cream. She was a talented sewer and enjoyed making clothes and blankets for her friends and family. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren.
